Self-Defense FAQS
What is self-defense?
Self-defense is a combination of awareness, assertiveness, verbal strategies, safety planning, and physical skills to help you prevent, escape, or survive violence. A solid course includes both mental preparation and hands-on practice.
Does self-defense really work?
Yes! Self-defense training gives you more options and helps you respond effectively in stressful situations—whether it’s avoiding, de-escalating, or defending yourself. Most assaults are by someone known to the victim, so training must address that reality.
Is self-defense training a guarantee of safety?
No. Nothing is 100% guaranteed. Be cautious of hype and exaggerated claims. A good program increases your awareness, choices, and readiness—not false promises.
Do I need years of training?
Not at all. A basic course can provide essential skills that you build on over time. While some techniques come from martial arts, self-defense is not about mastering a sport—it’s about practical tools you can use right away.
What about pepper spray, Mace, or self-defense tools?
Tools like sprays can help, but only if you know how to use them—and have them ready. They’re not foolproof. Anything you carry can be taken and used against you. Your best tools? Your awareness, your body, and your mindset.
Should I get a gun?
Generally, no. Firearms come with serious risks and responsibilities. Studies show that guns in the home are more likely to harm someone you know. There are no shortcuts—true self-protection comes from training, awareness, and empowered decision-making.
